About Gustavo Nazareno:
Born in Três Pontas, Brazil, and based in São Paulo, Gustavo Nazareno is a self-taught contemporary artist whose practice draws from the fables and deities of the Orisha tradition—spiritual entities worshipped across Africa and the Diaspora.
His paintings and charcoal drawings channel the visual language of Candomblé, Santería, ancestral memory, and contemporary aesthetics, creating poetic meditations on transition, mortality, and the divine.
Nazareno’s work has been exhibited at leading cultural institutions, including:
Museu Afro Brasil Emanoel Araújo
Pérez Art Museum Miami
El Espacio 23
Gallery 1957 (Accra, Ghana)
In 2026, Nazareno will present a major solo exhibition curated by Danny Dunson at The DuSable Museum.
