Status: Full-Time
Hours / Week: 35
Salary Range: $95,000–$140,000
About the DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center
Located in Chicago’s historic Washington Park neighborhood, the DuSable Museum unites art, history, and culture. Founded in 1961, it is the oldest independent Black history museum in the United States. With over 15,000 pieces in its collection—including artwork, historical memorabilia, and archives—the Museum is a cultural cornerstone offering exhibitions, educational programming, and community events.
Position Summary
The Director of Development provides strategic leadership in planning, implementing, and overseeing fundraising initiatives to support the Museum’s mission and long-term goals. This role works in close collaboration with the President & CEO, development consultants, and the communications and marketing team.
Key Responsibilities
Campaign Management
- Manage a fundraising campaign supporting a $10M annual budget and $5M property maintenance endowment
- Establish solicitation priorities and strategies
- Prepare campaign materials and manage donor communications
- Plan cultivation and recognition events
- Track progress, donor data, and reporting
Fundraising & Relationship Building
- Develop relationships with individuals and organizations for major giving and sponsorship
- Lead annual fundraising planning
- Oversee grant writing for institutional support
- Manage donor acknowledgments and records
- Partner on donor-driven events and special project sponsorships
- Organizational Collaboration
- Work with Board members and department heads on strategic development goals
- Ensure operational systems are in place for donor cultivation and recognition
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred
- 10+ years of successful fundraising experience, ideally in arts or cultural institutions
- Knowledge of the philanthropic landscape locally and nationally
- Strong communication, budgeting, and organizational skills
- Proficient with MS Office and donor database systems
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a small team environment

2. Staff Accountant
Reports To: Director of Finance
Department: Finance
FLSA Status: Exempt
Status: Full-Time
Salary Range: $55,000–$72,000
About the DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center
The DuSable Black History Museum is one of the nation’s oldest institutions dedicated to African American history and culture. Its mission is to collect, preserve, and share the stories and achievements of African Americans through exhibitions, programs, and educational initiatives that promote appreciation and understanding.
Position Summary
The Staff Accountant plays a key role within the Finance Department, responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, supporting the museum’s fiscal health, and assisting with internal accounting processes. This role ensures timely financial transactions, reporting, and audit preparedness.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain general ledger and reconcile bank transactions
- Enter and match deposits and expenses in QuickBooks (QB)
- Request receipts and prepare deposit slips
- Handle donation letters and payroll journal entries
- Manage invoicing for group visits and facility rentals
- Coordinate with vendors for payments and W-9s
- Use bill.com to enter and track vendor invoices
- Order supplies and update gift shop inventory
- Assist with monthly reconciliations and audit preparation
- Track restricted donations and membership revenue
- Collaborate with departments on budget reviews
- Complete additional finance projects as needed
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field
- Minimum 3 years of accounting experience
- Experience with fund or nonprofit accounting preferred
- Strong proficiency in Excel and financial systems
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational and communication skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and meet deadlines
- Experience with QuickBooks, bill.com, and PQS a plus
